Harry Potter celebrated the 20th birthday this week of the launch of the very first book by J K Rowling. Harry potter books and movies have made the journey so remarkable and iconic, that no series can match the fan following (bookworms and movie buffs collectively).
It signified an era wherein people wanted to know which houses they would be sorted into had they been able to live in the wizarding world. Fans were also curious to figure out their patronus form or which subject would they like. They would have been discussions and arguments between friends, colleagues and even random strangers. These discussions would often have quotes from the books – ‘You’re a wizard, Harry’, ‘We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.’ etc. How can one forget the spells and language introduced by Rowling –wingardium leviosa, Stupefy, Sectum Sempra, Expelliarmus, Expecto Patronum, Petrificus Totalus, Mudblood, Muggle, etc.
This wizarding world is not just limited to books and movies – there are theme parks, audio books, fan – fiction sites, merchandise… There have also been bittersweet coupling memories like James and Lily Potter, Ron and Hermione, Harry and Ginny. The most enticing part of this world is it runs parallel to our world (Muggle world). There are relatable incidents mentioned that help you connect and links to the story better.
Apart from Magic, the books have dealt with values that it instills are intrinsically human qualities. It has taught us courage and bravery (facing bogarts to killing Voldemort), loyalty (Severus Snapes actions), trusting your instincts and those in your inner circle. It also deals with mental issues like dementors and facing them to winning over them! Most of all, it encouraged the young crowd to start reading regularly.
A world created by J K Rowling that had people of all age groups obsessed, glued to their couches and a loyal fandom to the characters portrayed. Happy 20th!!
