Real Madrid stepped in the field with a three point lead to Barcelona on the La Liga points chart, but at the end of the El Clasico, the two times were tied at the top spot thanks to a stunning last minute goal by Lionel Messi.

The El Clasico was a thrilling one with both teams playing offensive from the start. Cristiano Ronaldo had a few good chances but was not able to capitalize on them. Messi netted his milestone goal (500th) for Barcelona – second for the night – a low left foot shot from inside the area after a cross by Jordi Alba seconds before the final whistle. This goal helped Barcelona inch toward victory (3-2) as compared to a draw. It marked as a second consecutive win by Barcelona at Real Madrid’s home ground. The last game put Madrid in a crisis as Barcelona had won 4-0 and eventually Madrid replaced their coach from Rafa Benitez to Zinedine Zidane.

Post match Zidane was quoted saying, “We can’t be happy. When you don’t put the game away, things like this can happen. We are disappointed because we didn’t deserve to lose. But we weren’t smart after we equalized. We thought we could score the third goal but its dangerous to press up front when you are playing with 10 men.”
While Luis Enrique, coach and manager of Barcelona as all praise for Messi-magic displayed on the field.

He said, “It was a match between two teams that went for victory. Either one could have won it. Messi is the best player in history. He makes the difference.”

Looking at the statistics, Messi is the all-time leading scorer in the El Clasico with 23 goals. He has 47 goals with Barcelona in 46 games this season. He has scored 14 goals in his last 10 league matches and remains the competition’s leading scorer with 31 goals, seven more than his teammate Luis Suarez.
