Surface Pro 5 powered by Qualcomm ARM? At least ARM Windows 10 laptops are coming

SHARE

Qualcomm has just confirmed that Microsoft is intending to bring x86 or 32-bit support for Qualcomm processors and this will culminate into ARM-powered Windows 10 laptops that will be launched sometime later this year.

The confirmation by Qualcomm has ignited the rumours about an ARM powered Surface Pro 5 and while this is highly unlikely, we would never know what Microsoft has under its sleeve until it actually releases the Surface Pro 5.

Confirmation about ARM-powered Windows 10 laptops came from Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf who said during company’s latest investor call that the company’s Snapdragon 835 is expanding into Mobile PC designs running Windows 10. He added that the processors will be powering Windows 10 laptops that will be launched in the fourth calendar quarter this year.

Windows 10 forARM doesn’t just happen out of the box and to ensure that Windows 10 behaves at its best on ARM processors, Microsoft is building an emulator into the operating system. According to Qualcomm, Microsoft is bringing x86 or 32-bit support for ARM processors, but running x64 apps won’t be a problem either.

Microsoft says there will be support for “apps, peripherals, and enterprise capabilities,” to allow for a mobile, power efficient version of Windows 10. According to the company, ARM processors in Windows 10 PCs will help in improving battery life and cellular connectivity on Qualcomm devices.

Qualcomm hasn’t revealed the partners it will be working with to build ARM laptops.

“Hardware partners will be able to build a range of new Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered Windows 10 PCs that run x86 Win32 and universal Windows apps, including Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office and popular Windows games,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

While Microsoft has been clear on its ARM intentions and now has confirmed Windows 10 laptops powered by Snapdragon processors, we are still not sure if the Surface Pro 4 maker will launch a Surface Pro 5 powered by ARM chip. Rumours at the beginning of the year indicated that a ARM Surface Pro 5 could happen, but over the weeks the rumours died because reports from Microsoft’s supply chain indicated it won’t happen.
