For the very first time, El Clasico will take place in the US and it will be in the form of a friendly scheduled for July 29 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami – home for NFL’s Miami Dolphins – as a part of International Champions Cup.
El Clasico is referred to as ‘The Classic’ – a title given to any match played between fierce rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. It is considered to be one of the biggest club football game and has recorded over 400 million viewers worldwide.
This is the second time that El Clasico will take place off the boundaries of Spain. They played each other at Venezuela (South America) in 1982. Similar to the preseason friendly tournament taking place this year, Barcelona played Real Madrid for a preseason tournament in Venezuela. Real won the preseason match by 1-0.
According to the organizers of this tournament, Miami was chosen over Dallas Cowboys Stadium. While the latter would also be sold out but the sole reason of allowing Miami to play host was courtesy to the large Hispanic community residing in Florida. It indirectly means that they rather have more passionate fans of Barcelona and Real Madrid watch the game.
The ICC co – founder and owner of Miami Dolphins, Stephen Ross said that when both the teams enter the field to play against each other there is nothing friendly about it. It is like they are at war with each other and both the teams hate to lose. Considering El Clasico friendlies, the record states that in the 31 games till date, Barcelona has won 19, eight draws and Real has won just four matches.
This game held at Miami is expected to include two of the best players of their respective teams, Lionel Messi – Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo – Real Madrid.
Tickets for the same will be made available on ICC’s website from March 20th, three days after the exclusive presale. It will be broadcasted on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.
