Two of first three Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes ever shot found

First three episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) were believed to have been lost over the years, but much to the delight of its creator Joel Hodgson and fans, two episodes have finally been located.

The two episodes: Invaders from the Deep, and Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars were found in the final boxes that they received earlier this year. Invaders from the Deep (1981) is about a time when aquatic aliens plot to take over the planet and the world aquanaut security patrol are called in to battle the aliens. The other episode that was found is the Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars (1981) wherein Captain Scarlet and friends battle the Mysterons from Mars.

The announcement was made by Hodgson on Kickstarter page wherein he also revealed how people can access it. The episodes are initially available to all those Kickstarter backers who have earned “Classic MST3K Bonus Episodes.” If you are one of then, you can find the episodes by logging in to your VHX account and going to the “Classic Episodes” section.

As the history for the series goes, the first three episodes of the show were recorded at the very beginning of MST3K’s original run on KTMA in Minneapolis. One popular fan theory regarding the lost episodes was that the Best Brains co-founder Jim Mallon has been holding the tapes of the lost episodes all this time. But Hodgson doesn’t make any mention of Mallon in the announcement. Instead he says that he thought that they had discovered copies of these episodes at one point during the Kickstarter campaign in 2015, but they actually hadn’t.

Hodgson notes in his Kickstarter update that re-watching the episodes nearly 30 years after they were made is rough, but that he is proud of them nonetheless. Chances are that these episodes will be released to the public at some point soon, but we are not sure when.
